Recommended Wordpress.org Plugins

Blogging with wordpress means tweaking with plugins. I spend my last three days venturing good plugins and toying with my blog. Here are some top plugins I could recommend to use all the time:

1. Contextual Related Posts. This plugin automatically shows related post read by your reader below the comment box (or anywhere you put it). I chose this plugin because it doesn’t require any modification toward the mysql database.

2. Comment Quicktags +. Have you noticed the tags button on the comment box of this blog? That’s what this plugin does. It adds additional tag buttons to help editing comments. I used this because the absence of WYSIWYG visual editor for comment box for wordpress.org.

3. StatPress. This plugin is monitoring your blogstats in real-time. You could see detailed information in control panel. Just beware of the rising size of the database though (could be deleted easily through myphpadmin panel)

4. All in One SEO Pack. I’m pretty sure you are all more knowledgeable about these SEO-stuff and meta-thingies than me. I just recently used this plugin to optimize and increasing pageviews of my blog. Apparently you could add keywords in all of your posts so it’s simply “Optimizing”.

5. Wordpress Gravatars. This one will add support for gravatar in your wordpress commentator picture. It’s useful especially when if your visitors don’t have their own profile picture.

6. Yahoo/MSN Style Smileys. Sick of these crappy smilies provided by wordpress.org? You could easily change them with this plugin. I just recently used it and now I could smile at my heart content.

7. WordPress.com Stats. Tracks your site alternatively by using wordpress.com service. It’s good alternative if you somehow deleted your database statistic.

8. Browser Sniff. Detect the commentators’ OS and Browser and display them in their comment. It’s a nice eye-candies.

9. Brian’s Threaded Comments. Make your comments threaded, just like livejournal. I don’t have plan to use it soon because it doesn’t seem compatible with this Amazing Grace theme.

10. Google Analytics. Pretty helpful tools to track your site’s statistics by using google service. Yes, I use three statistic plugins.

And, here’s the list of plugins I’m still looking for, they are either confusing (need to modify the database) or simply not exist at all:

1. WYSIWYG Editor for comment box. So far I only found plugins like moresmilies by Alex King or other that implements quicktags on coment box. Perhaps it’s too hard to create one? I think it’s very nice if the commentator could use full editor to edit their message.

2. Smilies box. I want to use moresmilies plugin, but for some reason I was confused when going to customize the smilies set. I actually want to make all my smilies correspond to priyadi’s yahoo/msn style smilies. But I just don’t know how. Perhaps I will use it later after I have found good tutorial.

3. Most popular post. There are just too much plugins out there, I’m confused which are the best and the simplest one to use. Lorelle has posted comprehensive guide here. I have tried some, but most require modification of the database. That’s the part where I successfully failed. . My friend, Verdinand actually used this on his site, but wow, I always forget to ask him what plugin he actually installed.

Done! I’m now using Alex King’s Popularity Contest. I only need to modify my sidebar.php and paste the strings given. , alternatively, you could also use JAW Popular Post plugin to show your popular post as widget.

Any other plugins you want to recommend? Maybe you have some useful plugins I should try? Sugesstion would be appreciated, and oh, make sure they are not too difficult to use.

Ngeblog dengan wordpress berarti bermain-main dengan plugins. Saya menghabiskan tiga hari terakhir mencari plugins bagus untuk mempercantik blog ini. Berikut ini adalah plugins bagus yang bisa saya rekomendasikan pada pengguna wordpress:

1. Contextual Related Posts. Plugin ini secara otomatis menaruh post-post yang bertautan kepada pembaca dibawah comment box (atau dimanapun Anda meletakkannya). Saya memilih plugin ini karena tidak membutuhkan modifikasi apapun pada database mysql.

2. Comment Quicktags +. Apa anda memperhatikan tombol tag pada kotak komen di blog ini? Inilah hasil plugin tersebut, menambahkan tombol tag untuk membantu mengedit komen. Saya menggunakan ini karena belum ada editor WYSIWYG visual editor untuk comment box.

3. StatPress. Plugin ini memonitor statistik blog Anda. Detail bisa dilihat di control panel, hati-hati saja kalau ukurannya jadi terlalu besar, tapi jangan khawatir, karena bisa didelete dengan mudah di panel myphpadmin .

4. All in One SEO Pack. Saya yaki Anda semua lebih tahu soal SEO dan meta dibanding saya. Saya menggunakan plugin ini karena katanya bisa mengoptimalkan situs saya dalam search engine. Kita juga bisa menambahkan keywords pada post kita, sehingga lebih “optimal”.

5. Wordpress Gravatars. Menambahkan gravatar pada wordpress. Berguna jika mereka tidak memiliki profile picture.

6. Yahoo/MSN Style Smileys. Enek dengan smilies jelek yang disediakan wordpress.org? Mereka bisa diganti dengan mudah melalui plugin ini.

7. WordPress.com Stats. Memantau statistik blog anda menggunakan servis wordpress. Berguna kalau anda meng-delete database statistik anda.

8. Browser Sniff. Mendeteksi OS dan Browser yang dipakai commentator di komen mereka. Lumayan buat cuci mata. \

9. Brian’s Threaded Comments. Membuat komen menjadi “threaded” seperti livejournal. Saya berhenti memakai plugin ini karena tidak kompatibel dengan theme Amazing Grace ini. Mungkin nanti saja, soalnya ga butuh-butuh amat (berguna kalau dipakai pada situs yang banyak diskusi)

10. Google Analytics. Berguna untuk memantau statistik situs menggunakan Google. Ya, saya menggunakan tiga plugin untuk statistik.

Dan ini adalah daftar plugins yang masih saya cari, mereka sulit dipakai (harus memodifikasi database) atau memang tidak ada sama sekali:

1. WYSIWYG Editor untuk comment box. Sejauh ini saya hanya menemukan plugin sepertimoresmilies yang dibuat aAlex King atau yang menambahkan quicktags pada comment box. Mungkin terlalu susah dibuat? Menurut saya akan sangat menyenangkan kalau commentator bisa menggunakan full editor untuk mengedit komen mereka.

2. Smilies box. Sebenarnya saya ingin menggunakan moresmileis plugin, tapi karena alasan teknis, saya agak bingung sewaktu harus memodifkasi smilies-nya. Saya sebetulnya ingin mengganti seluruh smilies di situs ini menjadi smilies yahoo/msn, tapi ga ngerti gimana caranya. Mungkin nanti saja kalau sudah menemukan tutorial yang mudah dicerna.

3. Most popular post. Terlalu banyak plugin, dan saya bingung harus memilh yang mana paling mudah dipakai. Lorelle telah menuliskan artikel komperhensif disini. Saya telah mencoba beberapa, tapi kebanyakan butuh memodifikasi database. Teman saya, Verdinand sebenarnya telah menggunakan plugin serupa di situsnya, Tapi saya selalu lupa menanyakan plugin apa yang dia pakai.

Masalah terpecahkan. Sekrang saya menggunakan Popularity Contest oleh Alex King. Saya hanya perlu memodikasi sidebar.php dan meng-paste string-string yang disediakan. Alternatif lain, anda bisa menggunakan JAW Popular Post plugin untuk menampilkan popular post anda sebagai widget.

Apa ada plugin lain yang mau Anda rekomendasikan? Apa ada plugins yang menurut anda berguna? Saya menerima saran, dan kalau bisa plugin-nya jangan terlalu susah untuk dioperasikan.
