Google sudah menjadi menu wajib bagi pengguna internet masa kini. Apapun yang ingin diketahui, pasti tersedia di Google. Saya kira kita tidak perlu memperdebatkan kalau Google kini sudah menjadi mesin pencari terbaik yang pernah ada. Paling lengkap, paling praktis, dan dapat diandalkan. Luar biasanya, semua layanan terbaik ini didapatkan dengan GRATIS!
Awalnya saya bingung dari mana Google memperoleh laba dari bisnis mesin pencari ini. Makin bingung ketika mengetahui Google menangguk 321 Juta Dollar setiap tahun. Setelah membaca buku The Story of Google baru saya mengerti bagaimana Google menemukan cara baru untuk mempertemukan kualitas layanan terbaik, tanpa biaya tinggi kepada pemakai dan yang paling penting: profitable!.
Coba ketikkan kata kunci ini pada Google : “web hosting”, maka Anda akan melihat seperti ini :

Hasil pencarian akan terpecah menjadi dua kolom. Di kolom kiri adalah hasil pencarian utama dan di kolom kanan terdapat beberapa link yang berkaitan dengan web-hosting. Nah, link-link yang berada di sebelah kanan ini membayar Google agar dapat tampil apabila pengguna mengetikkan kata web hosting. Ini adalah jasa Google untuk mempromosikan para pemilik web site kepada para pengguna Google dan jasa ini dinamakan Google Adsense. Layanan Google Adsense inilah yang menjadi salah satu pundi-pundi uang Google (selain Adwords, Froogle,dll).
Tetapi fokus tulisan ini bukan pada Google Adsense melainkan konsep ekonomi bisnis yang ada dibelakangnya. Google menerobos gaya-gaya bisnis lama yang menganut biaya tinggi untuk kualitas bagus. Ini sesuai dengan apa yang dikatakan C.K.Prahalad. Mengenai konsep bottom of pyramid. Kita harus membayar sekian dollar untuk dapat menggunakan jasa terbaik dari Microsoft. Namun dengan Google, Anda dapat menggunakan google application sebagai alternatif microsoft office Anda dengan gratis. Otomatis Sang Bill Gates pun kini berang dengan aksi Google ini. Dan akan banyak lagi kebutuhan manusia yang akan diproduksi dengan kualitas dengan sangat bagus disertai harga yang sangat terjangkau. Googleconomy tak lama lagi akan menghancurkan dunia bisnis konvensional!

If someone doesn’t know Google, he probably doesn’t know the existance of Internet. The usage of Google in internet has become so common that one might use the verb “googling” when searching through google and internet is associated with google search engine. Google unquestionably has become the most popular, and the most used search engine in the world. And the best of all, most of the services are provided for free.
At first I was confused how google got its profit since it doesn’t charge anyone for its service. I was even more confused after reading that Google received $321 million annually. After reading the Story of Google, I began to grasp how google marry the best services possible without high cost to the users, and the most important all: profitable.
Let’s say you’re looking for “web hosting”, thus you will receive such result:

The result as you see, is splitted into two columns. The left column is the main result, and the right column is the sponsored results. The right links are links paid by the advertiser to put their ads in google. Google shows the ads through their publisher through Google adsense. Google adsense becomes one of the most important Google’s buck other than its commcercial service (adwords, froogle, etc).
But the focus of this article is not about the google adsense, but the economic mechanism behind it. Google notably, has made a breakthrough to the conventional business: pay higher to get better quality, as referred to C. K. Pralahad remarks about bottom of pyramid. We must pay a certain bucks to enjoy Microsoft’s proprietary software. But with Google Office, you don’t even need to pay anything to get your own free office software. In the future, we, as internet users would probably enjoy even more services in more reasonable prices, as result of the fierce competition between the mammoths. Googleconomy slowly but sure, start corroding the old conventional business method.
