Cosmetic surgery is part of plastic Surgery, branch of surgery, dealing with the remodeling of any portion of the human body that has been damaged or deformed. Cosmetic surgery is manipulation of human body that is intended for cosmetic purpose.

In 2008, there has been 12.1 million cosmetic procedures in America According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons . The global market now exceeds $30 billion, with annual growth rate in range of 25%.

In Europe it is found that the market for cosmetic surgery alone is about $2.2 billion. According to ASPS, Breast augmentation, noise reshaping, liposuction, eyelid surgery and tummy tuck are top five surgical cosmetic procedures in this market . In 2008, Caucasian made 73% of cosmetic surgery recipient, followed 10% by Hispanic, 8% by African American, and 7% by Asian American .

Cosmetic Surgery to Increase Self-esteem
There are various reasons to each individual to take cosmetic surgery. Successful plastic surgery can lead to an increase of self-esteem and confidence. Plastic surgery is considered necessary with people who are insecure over their look, to increase attractiveness. Examples are found from celebrities of mixed race of African-American heritage who took spotlights in news, reported to have skin-lightening treatment despite the natural black pigment in their genetic.

Asian-American which made of Chinese heritage take eyelid-surgery to increase the attractiveness of eyes. In South Korea, Eyelid surgery is popular due increase of sitcom artists of south Korean soap opera who undergoing the medical treatments. Parents encourage children to take surgery because in South Korea, look is often as important as study in the society.

There are even children who gave their parents gift voucher for cosmetic surgery for their birthday and they are happy with it. Apparently there are no place for inner beauty in such society. Appearance does matter but to take into that extent… I couldn’t help but to think south Koreans have too much inferiority complex to western and the Eurasian people.

With the overexposure and overuse of Eurasians in the sitcoms, many people wish to have Eurasian feature here and there, forgetting it’s all material. It will perish someday, and they are risking to deteriorate their face by ornamenting their face with cosmetic surgery.

Proper education and is deemed necessary because cosmetic surgery also reflects insecurity of psychological state of person as individual.

Plastic surgery is unfortunately, without risk. Frequent number of plastic surgery might increase possibility of complication which potentially degenerate look as shown in Michael Jackson’s case. The king of Pop has been noted for taking rhinoplasty to reshape the form of his nose, which over the years degenerate and cause him to have unusual look, where his nose was crucified with beyond no point of return .

In one interview, the artist mentioned his source of insecurity over the look came from his own family. His father and brother often ridiculed him over his nose and gave him deragotary name such as “big nose” which affects the insecurity over his nose and his apperance.

There has been numerous report of health complication and risk. Numerous operations could increase possibility to alter appearance to the point it might deteriorate appearance and causing backfire to original plan, which is to increase self-worth, confidence, and attractiveness.

While it is individuals’ every right to take plastic surgery to increase the self confidence and self-esteem, it reflects psychological insecurity over one’s perception toward appearance.

I really think every individual in the world is beautiful, unless they admit themselves ugly. If you think you are ugly, you are ugly. If you think you are beautiful, you are one.

I don’t want to sound like some spiritual teacher, but deep inside my mind, that’s what I thought of what being human.

People often forget cosmetic derived from “Cosmos”, which means “beautiful” and also “universe”. The hermetic wisdom from the ancient past taught us to believe beyond the matter that envelop our body, there was light, a beautiful light radiating that was part of cosmos.

The inner beauty sparked from that light. And we shouldn’t forget: inside of us is Cosmos which suppress any cosmetic in the world.
